The Origin of "Ichigo Ichie" (一期一会)
The phrase "Ichigo Ichie" is a well-known maxim in the Japanese Tea Ceremony (Chado). It carries a weight of resolve far deeper than just "a rare meeting."
1. The Root: The Teachings of Sen no Rikyu
The roots of this concept trace back to Sen no Rikyu, the legendary 16th-century tea master. His disciple, Yamanoue Soji, recorded the following philosophy in his writings (Yamanoue Soji-ki):
"From the moment you enter the garden path until the moment you leave, you should respect the host as if the gathering were a once-in-a-lifetime event."
This taught that practitioners should treat every single tea gathering with the utmost sincerity, knowing it can never be perfectly replicated.
2. The Formalization: Ii Naosuke
While the spirit came from Rikyu, it was Ii Naosuke, a Chief Councilor (Tairo) of the Tokugawa Shogunate in the 19th century, who established "Ichigo Ichie" as a formal four-character idiom.
In his book Chato Ichie Shu, he explained:
Even if the same host and guests gather many times, today’s specific gathering can never be repeated.
Therefore, both the host and guest must act with complete sincerity, treating the occasion as a solitary, lifelong encounter.
During the turbulent final years of the Edo period, life was unpredictable. This gave the phrase a sharp edge of reality: the person sitting across from you today might not be there tomorrow.
3. Breaking Down the Terms
Ichigo (一期): A Buddhist term meaning "one's entire lifetime" (from birth to death).
Ichie (一会): Meaning "one gathering" or "one meeting."
