① その年の新茶の封を切る「口切り」Kuchikiri: Opening the jars of new tea for the year
春に摘んだ新茶(碾茶)は、半年ほど蔵で熟成させる
茶壺に納めて封じておいた茶の封を切るのが11月
日本の茶人にとって、新しい一年分の茶を使い始める大切な儀式
⇒ 新しい年の始まりのようにめでたい行事とされるThe fresh tea (tencha), picked in spring, is aged in storage for about half a year.
The seal of the tea jar is opened in November.
This ceremony marks the moment when tea practitioners begin using the year’s newly aged tea.
⇒ Therefore, it is regarded as a celebratory event, comparable to the beginning of a new year.
② 炉を開く「炉開き」Rohiraki: Opening the hearth
茶室では、11月になると風炉(夏のしつらえ)から炉(冬のしつらえ)へ切り替える。これを「炉開き」といい、茶道の一年の本格的な始まりと考えられてきた
In a tea room, November marks the shift from the summer brazier (furo) to the sunken winter hearth (ro).
This is called Rohiraki, and it symbolizes the true beginning of the tea year.
