    新しい年の始まりのようにめでたい行事とされる

  • The fresh tea (tencha), picked in spring, is aged in storage for about half a year.

  • The seal of the tea jar is opened in November.

  • This ceremony marks the moment when tea practitioners begin using the year’s newly aged tea.
    Therefore, it is regarded as a celebratory event, comparable to the beginning of a new year.

炉を開く「炉開き」Rohiraki: Opening the hearth

  茶室では、11月になると風炉(夏のしつらえ)から炉(冬のしつらえ)へ切り替える。これを「炉開き」といい、茶道の一年の本格的な始まりと考えられてきた

  • In a tea room, November marks the shift from the summer brazier (furo) to the sunken winter hearth (ro).

  • This is called Rohiraki, and it symbolizes the true beginning of the tea year.
